How to Get to Mount Bromo from Surabaya Using Public Transportation   

If you're arriving in Surabaya by plane or train and want to visit Mount Bromo using public transportation, here's a step-by-step guide to help you plan your trip.

By Train to Probolinggo

• Step 1: Arrive at Surabaya Airport or Train Station :
• Surabaya has an international airport called Juanda International Airport (SUB), and two main train stations: Gubeng Station or Sidoarjo train station. From any of these, your first goal is to reach the city of Probolinggo, the main gateway to Mount Bromo.
• Step 2: Go to cemorolawang village or Ngadisari village by taxi 
• Then option to explore bromo can use jeep or hiking by foot to seruni view point.

By train to Malang city

• Step 1 : by train from Yogyakarta or Surabaya to Malang train station
• Step 2: by jeep to national park by Tumpang . OR by private car to Tosari to take jeep and to explore bromo

The journey takes about 2 to 3 hours. You can book tickets on apps like Traveloka, KAI Access, or buy directly at the station. It's one of the easiest and cheapest ways to reach Probolinggo.

By Bus:

• Step 1 :From Surabaya’s Bungurasih Bus Terminal (Purabaya), take a bus to Probolinggo Bus Terminal (Bayuangga Terminal). The bus ride also takes about 3 to 4 hours, depending on traffic.
• Step 2  Probolinggo to Cemoro Lawang (Bromo Village)
• Steap 3Once you arrive in Probolinggo, your next destination is Cemoro Lawang, the nearest village to Mount Bromo.

By Local Minibus (Angkot/Shared Van):

Outside the train or bus station in Probolinggo, you’ll find shared minivans going to Cemoro Lawang. These minivans usually leave when they are full (around 10-15 passengers). The price is around IDR 35,000–50,000 per person (the year 2022}  the journey takes around 1.5 to 2 hours and goes through mountain roads.

Important Notes:

The vans only operate during the day, usually until late afternoon (around 4–5 PM).

If you arrive late, you may need to wait longer for other passengers or pay extra to leave with fewer people.

Stay Overnight in Cemoro Lawang

It’s best to spend the night in Cemoro Lawang, so you can wake up early and start the Bromo sunrise tour. There are many homestays, guesthouses, and hotels in the area with various price ranges.

To enter Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, you must use a 4x4 jeep,  or by foot to seruni hill. jeep which you can book through your hotel or a local operator. The jeep takes you to the viewpoint to see the sunrise over Bromo, then down to the sea of sand and the crater.

Getting to Bromo from Surabaya by public transportation takes planning and time, but it’s an affordable and adventurous way to experience East Java’s most famous volcano.
